ALLIES OF THE FELLOWSHIP

Bilbo Baggins (Hobbit)

Bilbo is Frodo’s uncle, and was the Ring-bearer for many years, which has given him a particularly long lifespan. Thanks to the Ring’s magic, Bilbo still looks like a young man. He is quite resistant to the artefact’s power, but it still takes all of Gandalf’s powers of persuasion to convince him to give it to Frodo, proving just how strong its corrupting power is.

Tom Bombadil (nature-spirit)

Tom Bombadil is a forest spirit who is as old as the world itself, and is only interested in the forest and the love of his life, Goldberry. He is the only character in the novel who is entirely immune to the Ring’s influence. Tom Bombadil represents nature in all its splendour.

He is described as taller and stockier than a Hobbit, but shorter than a man. He has a ruddy complexion and bright brown eyes.

Elrond (Elf)

Elrond is an extremely old Elf. He has dark hair and his face is described as ageless, and he possesses a kind of majestic grace. He is the Lord of Rivendell, and saves Frodo from the wound inflicted upon him by a Nazgûl. He presides over the council that is called to decide the fate of the Ring.

Arwen (Elf)

Arwen is Elrond’s daughter and a distant relative of Galadriel. She is said to be the most beautiful of all the Elves, and is known as the Evening Star among her people. She is betrothed to Aragorn and marries him when he is crowned king. She has black hair and clear, pale skin.

Galadriel (Elf)

Galadriel, who is described as an incredibly beautiful woman with golden hair, is one of the oldest Elves in the world. She is the wearer of one of the three Elven-rings, which allows her to ensure the safety of her kingdom, Lothlórien. Like Gandalf, she is tempted by the Ring, and declares that if she possessed it, she would use it to overthrow Sauron and make herself the queen of a better world.

Éomer (human)

Éomer is the nephew of Théoden and the brother of Éowyn. He is extremely loyal to his king, and succeeds him after Théoden’s death. He is described as extremely tall, and has pale eyes.

Théoden (human)

Théoden is the king of Rohan and the uncle of Éomer and Éowyn. He is greatly weakened by the lies of his corrupt advisor, Gríma Wormtongue, and by the death of his son Théodred, but he regains his strength thanks to Gandalf. He is killed by the Witch-king of Angmar, the leader of the Nazgûl, during the Battle of Pelennor Fields. He is the archetype of a strong, just king who fearlessly charges into battle.

Due to Gríma’s influence, he is described as an old man with a long beard, white hair and shoulders that are stooped with worry the first time we see him. However, when he regains his senses, he also regains the commanding presence of a king.

Éowyn (human)

Éowyn is Théoden’s niece and Éomer’s sister. She is extremely proud, and being forced to watch her uncle sinking into an increasingly advanced state of decrepitude has taken a heavy toll on her.
